North Carolina requires that children entering Kindergarten, 7th, and 12th grade receive updated routine vaccinations. They provide protection from serious illnesses such as polio, tetanus, pertussis, measles, and others, like varicella, can prevent health problems years down the road.
If you have questions about what vaccines your child needs, talk to your child’s medical provider or
schedule an appointment at the Immunizations Clinic at Catawba County Public Health by calling 828-695-5881. If you are concerned about cost, the Vaccines for Children program may be able to help.
Call Catawba County Public Health to find out about eligibility.

The out-of-district transfer window for Catawba County Schools, Newton-Conover City Schools, and Hickory City Schools opened last Friday, June 1. The window closes on Monday, June 30th. If your child would like to transfer to Newton-Conover Middle School and you have viable means of transportation to get the students to and from school, please come by the N-CMS main office to fill out out-of-district paperwork before June 30th.
N-CMS has experienced strong academic success over the last several years. We have three consecutive years of meeting growth according to the NC EOG accountability model. For the past two years, we have been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 40% of middle schools in the state.
N-CMS students have access to sports, clubs, and an excellent Arts department, featuring Band, Chorus, and Theatre, which begins in the 6th grade. This past year, N-CMS won three conference titles in girls' and boys' soccer, as well as boys' basketball. Our Math Olympiad team won the county competition at CVCC, and our Battle of the Books team placed first in the county Book Bash and fourth in the regional competition.
We also have a PBIS program that recognizes students' positive behaviors, as well as an Honor program that celebrates students' academic achievements.
If you have any questions about the enrollment process, please call our school at (828) 464-4221, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parents,
Wednesday and Thursday are makeup and readministration testing days for students who missed an EOG exam or those who were close to passing. Students who missed an EOG must plan to be at school, as it is required by the state to take EOGs. Teachers will contact parents of students who need to return to retake any exams.
6th and 7th grade parents, please note that EOG scores are a factor in placing students in classes and determining awards and scholarships. Early college high schools in the county use these scores as part of their acceptance process. Students who aspire to go to HCAM, Challenger, Discovery, or CORE are highly encouraged to retake any EOGs they are eligible for.
You can contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.
